FRIDAY’S VISIT TO ALUNISU

It was a welcome break from the Expo Transilvania site to spend Friday in the sunshine with around 70 other delegates visiting the small village of Alunisu, about 62 km outside of Cluj.

The small population turned out to welcome us at the village centre, with three horse-drawn wagons and cakes straight from the oven.  The tour was led by Lars and Robyn Veraart, who moved the area from the US and the Netherlands around 6 years ago to learn how to live a simpler life in harmony with nature.

The first thematic meetings are underway at the Nyéléni Europe Forum. About 150 people gathered in a cold wing of the Transilvania Expo to discuss achievements and challenges around access to land and natural resources in Europe.

Attendants split up in 9 different working groups to discuss three questions that will feed into the Thursday’s plenary session on the local, national and international policies that we want to target or influence.

Enike and Istvan run a CSA (community supported agriculture) farm that provides many of our Ecoruralis hosts with their weekly box on a year-round basis. The essential aspects of shared risk and benefits are in place, as is the year-long commitment to their farm, even if payment is made on a weekly basis. This is not unusual in countries where family income is as low as it is in rural Romania. On our recent and final face-to-face Nyéléni Europe Coordination Committee meeting in Cluj, I had the extreme good fortune to stay at their home that is also an urban farm.
